ABOUT ME
Raya is a Grade 12 student from North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada with a passion for making a positive impact through business and dance.
Recently she was a Regional Award winner of Rideau Hall Foundation’s Ingenious+ Youth Innovation Challenge (2024)
Last year, she joined with four others in creating a product called ‘The Smarker,’ a UV-sensing marker which indicates when sunscreen should be re-applied, helping to prevent skin cancer. Fresh from winning the 10th annual edition of the Youth Entrepreneurs Leadership Launchpad (YELL) Business Venture Challenge, the Smarker team is planning to develop a proof-of-concept to advance their idea.
During the pandemic, Raya and her friend launched their first e-commerce shop called Totally Accessorized. By selling handmade accessories and donating partial proceeds to COVID-19 research, they achieved their goal of promoting self-confidence within young girls while helping to fight global problems.
Raya has over 13 years of competitive dance training primarily in ballet, pointe, lyrical, contemporary, jazz and broadway in addition to some training in hip hop and Bollywood dance.
Raya has received formal accreditation for Advanced Two Royal Academy of Dance
She currently receives 25 hours of dance training a week which has taught her the value of dedication, discipline, and time management.
In 2022, Raya was accepted as a participant in the Atlanta Ballet summer intensive program in Atlanta, Georgia. Raya has participated in Ballet Bloch’s Nutcracker show for the last 4 years, with progressively challenging roles.
Regional Award winner of Rideau Hall Foundation’s Ingenious+ Youth Innovation Challenge (2024) for an innovation that addresses the challenges facing the health of the public. Ingenious+ gives youth in Canada the opportunity to innovate for good, and to share strategies for improving our world by doing something better to make an impact.
Last year, she received the honor of the Most Dedicated Dancer award at North Shore Academy of Dancing as well as the Most Outstanding Performer Award for Speech at the VAYA Speech, Arts and Drama Festival.
In addition to being involved in several dance performances, she has successfully participated in many solo and group dance competitions, most recently the international Youth America Grand Prix in Toronto, Ontario.
Raya enjoys mentoring younger dance students through assisting classes and shared her passion for dance through a TED Talk entitled “Passion Leads to Purpose.”
